About the Artist

Gerelkhuu Ganbold has been working in large-scale paintings since the beginning of his career, exploring the complexity of the human soul in his dramatic characters with their colorful palette. While his works represent the living world, they are infused with a unique hybridity inspired by archeological finds of Mongolia and anime and manga of his time. For his large-scale paintings and series of portraits, he was inspired by his peers.

The big-scale paintings reveal conflicts, with emotional suggestions and unpredictable scenes that provide glimpses into his imagination. In many of his tales, Gerelkhuu seems to say that times change and death comes to us all. Violence and its consequences are ever-present.

Gerelkhuu Ganbold gradually but forcefully makes us ever more aware of our surroundings in our precariously balanced urban life. He is unafraid to talk about alienation, violence, the loss of traditions, the suffocating crush of urban life, the indecision in society, and the pervasive influence of technology that makes us strangers to each other. Using his rich palette of colors, the artist enhances the action and gently leads us to understand his time and place better.

Ganbold incorporates the notions of society, environment, history, living, and non-living beings in his practice. Sometimes, there seems to be no boundaries between past, present, and future, but between real and fictional. Everything on his panel is connected; they make one whole universe with its system. Adding intellectual depth to Gerelkhuu Ganbold's narrative work are numerous objects and motifs that fix his tales in time and place, real and imagined: his armor, weapons, masks, helmets, and horses speak to battles and legends long ago, to a time of rigidly ordered warfare.

His intensely and exquisitely colored works stand out instantly as dramatic narratives that embrace time and legend in ways that allude to illuminated graphic art, historical Western romantic art, and an East/West cross-cultural notion of heaven and hell where the beast defeats humanity and obliterates comforting traditions.

The medium Ganbold uses is mainly acrylic and ink on canvas. However, he easily transports his art to the medium of textile and metal. Weapons such as knives, swords, and guns occupy a prominent place in his work, and depending on the content of the work, it touches on many aspects. His works have been exhibited at international exhibitions such as QAGOMA, Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, and UBIMAF, and have been shown in countries such as Germany, Belgium, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, the United States, Australia, and Bulgaria.
